Research interests/expertise

My research spans filmmaking pedagogy, emerging production workflows, and the support and development of independent and early‑career filmmakers. I investigate industry‑aligned teaching models, particularly experiential and iterative learning, and contribute to national discourse through editorial work with the Film Education Journal. As a practice‑researcher, I explore creative development processes and collaborations, European co-production models, and the conditions shaping the UK and international screen industries, informed by ongoing professional practice including my award‑winning feature film RUDY and my professional consultancy as a script reader/assessor and industry mentor with Creative England / BFI. My work focuses on strengthening sustainable pathways into the industry and enhancing inclusive, practice-based film education.

Areas of teaching

My industry-informed knowledge of my subject area is applied through my roles as Programme Leader for the MA International Film Production, and the new BA Filmmaking, and my Senior Lectureship and module leadership of UG and PG students (including L6 and L7 final project supervision). I lead and contribute to modules across several programmes including the two aforementioned filmmaking programmes and BA Film Studies, BSc Media Production.
My teaching and learning practice is grounded in industry-led, student centred, practice based education, integrating real world collaboration, iterative creative processes, and authentic assessment design.

I teach across producing, script and story development, creative talent management, development of director’s vision, casting and working with actors, pitching and raising finance, production management, scheduling/budgeting, creative enterprise, and critical/industrial film studies around genre, audiences, and filmmakers, drawing on extensive professional expertise. I emphasise process, experimentation, and reflective practice, ensuring parity between practical and academic learning. My inclusive approach is shaped by deep awareness of learner diversity, fostering accessible learning environments through varied delivery techniques, inclusive practice, and personalised support. This pedagogic ethos consistently drives strong student engagement, progression, and attainment.
