91ÊÓƵfashion archives feature in new Netflix documentary

Fashion archives held at 91ÊÓƵ Leicester (DMU) have helped create a new documentary being shown on Netflix.

Too Disgusting To Be Confused (2025) is a 12-minute short which tells the story of the Alternative Miss World competition, the glittering, long-running pageant set up by Andrew, creating a space for people to freely express their gender and sexuality without prejudice.

Directed by Maya Avidov and produced by Savannah James-Bayly and Maya Avidov, the film was made as part of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund - a scheme created in 2020 to break down barriers of access for emerging filmmakers.

And to help tell the story of the iconic competition, the producers relied on the help of DMU's Special Collections department, which holds the university’s archives.

One of the most recent additions to the archives is that donated by Andrew Logan, who decided to gift the many boxes of film reels, letters, books, sketches, designs and costume pieces to 91ÊÓƵafter being made an honorand in 2023.

David Millns, assistant archivist in DMU’s Special Collections Department, was instrumental in helping the film’s producers create their documentary.

He said: “The majority of the work I did was scanning various materials such as photos, slides and documents and sending this over to the documentary makers. We also provided some digitised video content from VHS tapes.

“Beyond this I helped the researchers find the items they were looking for in the collection and was their point of contact for questions about the collection.

“You can see lots of our material throughout the film, if you see any photos or documents chances are good they came from our archive.”

Too Disgusting To Be Confused is showing in full on Netflix and YouTube.
