91ÊÓƵwins Fairtrade University status

91ÊÓƵ Leicester (DMU) has won a coveted Fairtrade University Award for its commitment to ethical consumption.

Given jointly by the Fairtrade Foundation and Students Organising for Sustainability UK, the award recognises sustained commitment over two academic years to increasing awareness and action on trade justice and globalisation.

As 91ÊÓƵsustainability manager Karl Letten explained: "We know that our students are concerned with issues such as ethical consumption, fairer trade and climate justice. As such we felt it was important to address those issues through how we manage our campus and operations. The Fairtrade University standard was the ideal process for this as it brings all of these issues together.

"Over the past 12 months we've worked very closely with our catering contractor, Chartwells, to increase the amount of Fairtrade products on campus. To raise awareness about fairer trade with our staff and students we’ve done a lot of sustainability roadshows, and worked with academics to highlight where they’ve already embedded trade justice issues within their teaching modules. We’re absolutely delighted that our hard work in this area has been recognised through the scheme and we have been awarded the Fairtrade University standard."

The award will last until 2027 when the university will have to be assessed again in order to retain its Fairtrade University status.

Sarah Brazier, Head of Campaigns at the Fairtrade Foundation said: “After celebrating 30 years of Fairtrade in the UK last year, Universities play a vital role in the Fairtrade movement. The passion and energy of students are central to creating a fairer world. Sales of Fairtrade products on campuses, speaking up for farmers and workers across the globe, and student-led initiatives have all contributed to change.”
